Getting fitted
How often should you get refitted?
Get refitted when your swing speed crosses one of ELDRICK's band edges (Stiff starts at 92 mph driver speed, for example) or when your clubs age past two years: ELDRICK adjusts clubs 2 years old or newer, offers adjust-or-replace at 3-4 years, and recommends a new head and shaft from 5 years.
| Club age | ELDRICK's approach |
|---|---|
| 2 years or newer | Adjust what you have (length, loft, shaft, swing weight) unless the fit is badly wrong |
| 3-4 years | Both options: upgrade, or adjust the current setup |
| 5-9 years | New head and shaft |
| 10 years or more | New head and shaft; reshafting not recommended |
A badly wrong fit (the wrong bias for your miss, or a head far from your skill level) gets a new head at any age.
| Driver speed | What changes |
|---|---|
| 70 / 71 mph | Shaft 40-49g to 50-59g; Light head at 70 mph or less unless you hook it |
| 78 mph | Senior to Regular flex |
| 80 mph | Starting loft 12° to 10.5°; the under-80 Light head rule ends |
| 86 mph | Shaft 50-59g to 60-69g |
| 92 mph | Regular to Stiff flex |
| 100 mph | Starting loft 10.5° to 9° |
| 104 / 108 mph | Stiff+ then Extra Stiff |
| Over 110 mph | Shaft 60-69g to 70-79g |
Speed changes are the real trigger
Golfers gain speed with training and lose it with age or injury. A few mph doesn't matter in the middle of a band, but near an edge it changes the build. A golfer who drops from 93 to 90 mph moves from Stiff to Regular in ELDRICK's ladder. Check your number once a season.
Length can hide speed, too. ELDRICK credits 2.5 mph per inch when your club is too short for you, up to 6 mph, and uses that for shaft weight. See driver shaft flex for the full ladder.
When age alone is enough
Head design moves on. From 5 years, ELDRICK recommends a new head and shaft instead of adjusting old clubs, and it never suggests reshafting irons more than 10 years old. Reshafting makes sense only for a recent head you love that still suits your game.
A refit takes about two minutes on ELDRICK.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I get fitted for golf clubs?
When your speed crosses a fitting band edge, or when your clubs reach 3-5 years old. ELDRICK recommends a new head and shaft from 5 years.
Should I reshaft my old irons?
Only if the heads are under 5 years old, suit your game and you love them. ELDRICK never recommends reshafting irons more than 10 years old.
Does losing swing speed mean new shafts?
If it moves you across a band edge, yes. Dropping from 93 to 90 mph driver speed moves you from Stiff to Regular.
Is a 3-year-old driver worth replacing?
Maybe. At 3-4 years ELDRICK gives you both options: upgrade, or adjust your current driver.
