Wedge bounce: low, mid or high?

Pick bounce from your attack angle: ELDRICK fits high bounce (12-14°) at -4° or steeper, mid bounce (8-10°) from just under -4° to 0°, and low bounce (4-6°) when your attack angle is positive. The lob wedge always gets the lowest bounce in your set, and mid bounce is the default when attack angle isn't known.

ELDRICK gap and sand wedge bounce by attack angle
Attack angleBounceWhy
-4° or steeperHigh, 12-14°A steep swing digs; bounce keeps the leading edge from going fat
Above -4° to 0°Mid, 8-10°Moderate turf contact; works from fairway and bunker
Above 0° (shallow)Low, 4-6°A picker's arc; more bounce would skip off tight lies

These bands apply to the gap and sand wedges. The lob wedge gets the highest bounce offered that's still below your lowest gap or sand wedge bounce.

Attack angle is the measurement

Attack angle is how steeply the club is moving down (negative) or up (positive) at impact. Most launch monitors report it. With a wedge, nearly everyone hits down, so the question is how much.

If you don't have a number, ELDRICK uses mid bounce, which is forgiving enough for most turf and most swings.

What about turf and sand?

ELDRICK doesn't take course conditions as an input yet. The general guidance wedge makers publish is that soft turf and fluffy sand favour more bounce, and firm, tight lies favour less. If your course is very soft or very firm, use that to choose between the two ends of your band.

Lofts come first. Get the spacing right with wedge gapping, then match bounce.

Frequently asked questions

What bounce should my sand wedge have?

Mid (8-10°) for an attack angle between just under -4° and 0°, high (12-14°) for steeper, low (4-6°) for a positive attack angle.

Should my lob wedge have low bounce?

In ELDRICK's sets, yes: the lob wedge always carries the lowest bounce of your wedges.

Is high bounce better for beginners?

High bounce helps steep swings, and steeper swings are common among newer golfers, but ELDRICK goes by your measured attack angle, not your level.

What bounce if I don't know my attack angle?

Mid bounce, 8-10°. That's ELDRICK's default.
