Lie
Iron lie angle: when to go upright or flat
ELDRICK sets iron lie from your wrist-to-floor: standard from just over 31" to 34", 1° flat from just over 29" to 31", 2° flat at 29" or less, and 1°, 2° or 3° upright up to 36", up to 38" and over 38". Drivers don't get a lie angle; the adapter setting covers it.
| Wrist-to-floor | Lie |
|---|---|
| 29" or less | 2° flat |
| Over 29" to 31" | 1° flat |
| Over 31" to 34" | Standard (slightly flat at 5'5" or shorter, slightly upright at 6'1" or taller) |
| Over 34" to 36" | 1° upright |
| Over 36" to 38" | 2° upright |
| Over 38" | 3° upright |
Measured relative to the iron head's standard lie. With both wrists measured, ELDRICK uses the average. With no measurement, it uses standard.

Who goes upright, who goes flat
A long wrist-to-floor (hands farther from the ground at address) needs the toe higher, so the lie goes upright. A short reading goes flat. Height only nudges the standard band: shorter golfers lean slightly flat, taller ones slightly upright.
Upright is far more common than flat in ELDRICK fittings: 19% against 3%.
Why lie changes direction
A lofted face tilts with the lie. Too upright and the face points left of where the sole is aimed for a right-hander, so shots start left; too flat and they start right. The more loft, the bigger the effect, which is why lie matters most on short irons and wedges.
Fitters commonly confirm a static lie with a lie board or impact tape, which shows where the sole touches the ground. ELDRICK's lie is the static starting point. Get your length right first: wrist-to-floor and length.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need upright irons if I'm tall?
Only if your wrist-to-floor is over 34". Height alone just nudges a standard lie slightly upright at 6'1" and taller.
How much does 1° of lie matter?
It changes where the face points at impact, and more so as loft goes up. ELDRICK fits lie in whole degrees, from 2° flat to 3° upright.
Does a driver have a lie angle?
Not in an ELDRICK fitting. The driver's adapter setting covers upright and flat, so no driver lie goes on the build sheet.
What lie do most golfers need?
Standard. 78% of ELDRICK iron fittings got a standard lie.
