How to measure wrist-to-floor, and the club length you need

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, let your arms hang relaxed and measure from your wrist crease straight down to the floor. ELDRICK fits a standard 37" 7-iron for a 34" to 35.9" reading, down to 35.5" under 29" and up to 38.25" at 40" or more.

How to measure wrist-to-floor for golf clubs

  1. Stand ready. Stand on a hard floor with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Relax your arms. Let your arms hang naturally at your sides in a relaxed position.
  3. Measure. Measure from your wrist crease straight down to the floor. A helper holding the tape keeps your shoulders level.
  4. Do both wrists. Repeat on the other wrist. ELDRICK asks for both.

Why length starts at the 7-iron

ELDRICK fits your 7-iron length from wrist-to-floor, then moves every other iron and wedge by the same amount. A golfer fitted at 37.25" (+0.25") gets a pitching wedge a quarter inch over its standard too.

Women's standards are half an inch shorter (36.5" 7-iron, 44.5" driver), and ELDRICK re-centres the table so an average 31" woman sits at standard.

Length also changes your speed

A club that's too short costs speed. When your current club is half an inch or more shorter than your fitted length, ELDRICK credits 2.5 mph per inch, up to 6 mph, when it picks shaft weight. The same measurement sets lie angle: see iron lie angle.

Frequently asked questions

What length irons do I need at 6 feet tall?

It depends on wrist-to-floor more than height. A typical reading of 34" to 35.9" fits a standard 37" 7-iron in ELDRICK's chart.

Should I measure wrist-to-floor in shoes?

Fitters commonly measure in the shoes you play in. Whatever you do, measure the same way for both wrists.

What's the average wrist-to-floor?

In ELDRICK fittings the median is 33.5" and half of golfers measure between 32" and 35.25".

Do I need longer clubs if I'm tall?

Only if your wrist-to-floor is 36" or more. Golfers 5'7" or shorter are never fitted longer than standard.
